What is the difference between Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Addiction?
- According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5), SUD ranges from a mild to severe compulsive, habitual, and/or relapsing use of a substance. This includes over the counter, prescribed, legal, or illegal mind altering substances.
- It is necessary to note, SUD is a clinical and medical term and Addiction is a societal term. However, SUD is a continuum which includes: chemical coping, chemical dependency, and addiction.
- Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her. Although the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for most people, the brain changes that occur over time challenge an addicted person’s self control and hamper his or her ability to resist intense impulses to take drugs. How does Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) work?

What can I expect from my first visit?
- On your first visit to the Procura Pain and Spine you will meet with a board-certified addiction medicine physician. This first meeting is to discuss your goals, needs, barriers, and possible treatment methods.
- Prior to arrival, it is necessary to complete the new patient paperwork which will help your physician better assist you during your visit.
